Families in Transition
Families in Transition is a JRS initiative designed to support individuals who are eager to assume more independence but who need considerable supports because of significant disabilities. JRS has partnered with Verland, another nonprofit agency, to bring a small licensed group home to Squirrel Hill, and, in collaboration with Jewish Family & Children's Service, is presenting free educational programs as part of a series called "AIM: Support for Families of Individuals with Special Needs."
The Solomon and Sarah Goldberg House
The Solomon and Sarah Goldberg House, which opened in Squirrel Hill in October 2014, celebrates Jewish culture, with a kosher kitchen, Shabbat meals and holiday celebrations. Three young men with intellectual disabilities live there, with support from a full-time staff, volunteers and their families. Fully accessible and located in close proximity to the Jewish Community Center and several synagogues as well as the public library and other neighborhood amenities, the home is designed to help residents be engaged in the community. JRS worked with Verland to raise money and develop a list of interested parties. Verland, as the licensed provider, handles all staffing and clinical issues, while JRS helps to facilitate connections with local congregations, neighbors and groups.
