Community Social Club
The Jewish Singles Social Network (JSSN) is a collaboration between the Jewish Community Center (JCC) and Jewish Residential Services (JRS). The JCC provides the meeting space and JRS provides the staff advisor. The JSSN was established in May of 2002 when it became apparent that there was a need for a social group for persons with disabilities older than teens but not seniors.
The group which is member-driven, and abides by a code of ethics established by the group, has approximately 20 active members; among those a board of officers. Officers include a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer / bookkeeper and outreach person. Officers are voted in annually through a democratic process. The group prides itself on being an independent one. The advisor attends planning meetings, but activities are attended without staff support. The group meets at the JCC usually every other Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and participates in activities alternating Tuesday evenings. Activities have included dining at local restaurants, movies, baseball games, game and craft nights, walking for exercise through the Squirrel Hill neighborhood or on trails at Schenley and Frick Parks, shopping trips and special holiday celebrations. Some of the annual events have included a Community Mitzvah, an evening at Kennywood Park, Super Bowl party and Thanksgiving Day "potluck" dinner.
Criteria for JSSN membership is:
- * At least 21 years old
- * Able to take public transportation independently (the group travels together on outings)
